Decomposition of Deglacial Pacific Radiocarbon Age Controls Using an Isotope‐Enabled Ocean Model

چکیده
During the last deglaciation Earth’s climate experienced strong and abrupt variations, resulting in major changes global temperature, sea level, ocean circulation. Although proxy records have significantly improved our understanding of during this period, questions remain regarding connection between circulation evolution geotracer distributions, including those deep waters Pacific. Here we use C-iTRACE simulation, a transient ocean-only, isotope-enabled version Community Earth System Model, to better understand deglacial Pacific radiocarbon context reservoir age changes. Throughout deglaciation, Ocean responds strongly glacial meltwater forcing, leading large Δ14C age. A multi-millennial weakening overturning from 20 15 ka BP leads increases ages, but 18 BP, nearly half (40%–60%) aging is controlled by changing surface age, corroborating previous studies showing that not solely tracer. As proceeds, change controls progressively more accounting for than 75% it across 8 BP.

Radiocarbon in dissolved organic carbon of the South Pacific Ocean
Marine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) originates mainly from primary production using dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) that has young C ages. Paradoxically, the C age of deep DOC ranges from 4000 to 6400 C years, indicating that a portion of DOC survives multiple, deep ocean mixing cycles. Here we show that C ages of DOC from the deep South Pacific are equal to those from the deep north central...
متن کاملReduced-Order Modeling of the Upper Tropical Pacific Ocean Model using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition
The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is shown to be an efficient model reduction technique for simulating physical processes governed by partial differential equations. In this paper, we make an initial effort to investigate problems related to POD reduced modeling of a large-scale upper ocean circulation in the tropic Pacific domain. We construct different POD models with different choice...
متن کاملSynchronous deglacial thermocline and deep-water ventilation in the eastern equatorial Pacific
The deep ocean is most likely the primary source of the radiocarbon-depleted CO2 released to the atmosphere during the last deglaciation. While there are well-documented millennial scale Δ14C changes during the most recent deglaciation, most marine records lack the resolution needed to identify more rapid ventilation events. Furthermore, potential age model problems with marine Δ14C records may...
